Happy Halloween

The Halloween season was an absolute BLAST this year.  Colton learned about pumpkins, jumping in leaves, and trick-or-treating!  The pumpkins started with Donna giving him a pumpkin from her garden.  After that, he said, “pumpkin!” wherever we saw one…which is everywhere in October.  We’ve still yet to carve our pumpkins, but we went to the Rocky Mountain pumpkin patch and Mike picked out some big orange beauties there.  We road the choo-choo-train (a new love of Colton’s) and navigated a corn maze.

About a week before Halloween, we had some windy and cold weather roll through so the leaves dropped nearly overnight.  At our new house, this meant about 15 leaves to play with in the yard.  Fortunately, Grandma and Popsie have huge trees in their backyard and Colton got a kick out of raking them into piles and throwing them in the air.

Colton trick-or-treated not once, but three times!!  First, we went to the Halloween parade in Longmont on the Saturday before.  We went with all of the cousins (except for Soph).  We joined in the parade on Main Street that was filled with costumed kids and parents.  There were the high school bands also marching in the parade to keep things festive.  After, the local businesses all had candy for the kids.  Colton couldn’t believe that he could stand in a line and a stranger would just give him candy!  His look of awe was precious.  On this day, the weather was 75 degrees.  I had carefully planned a Halloween costume that would keep Colton warm and cozy during the night and unfortunately the costume I made for him was WAY too hot for this day parade.  He dressed as a construction worker, complete with tools and hard hat.  On Halloween, we went to the Berthoud Living Center and trick-or-treated with the elderly residents there.  Our neighbor’s sister works at the retirement home, so we met our neighbor Rose there and had fun getting candy from a very captive audience.

Halloween night was spent in Fort Collins with the Fundalinskis and their friends, the Connors.  It was freezing, so finally Colton got to wear his super cozy puppy outfit that I sewed for him.  We had a crew of 6 kids and 6 adults….1 to 1 ratio is ideal to keep track of the kids on Halloween night.  Next year, Colton’s costume might be made of reflective tape or Christmas lights.  Colton was not at all bashful and ran from house to house with his little puppy tail wildly wagging in rhythm with his toddler waddle.  By the end of the night, he knew how to say “Trick or Treat!” very clearly.  🙂  He and his cousins had a great time.  We ate a yummy warm dinner back at the house and then headed home.  Watching Colton discover the magic of Halloween warmed my heart and brought so much joy to Mike and Me.
